Daniel Lee Mason III (Hall County Jail)
GAINESVILLE, Ga. -- Police have made an arrest in the April 2001 murder of a Gainesville woman.
The suspect, 40-year-old Daniel Lee Mason III, was arrested Dec. 5 for assaulting a woman in Gainesville, according to Gainesville Police Cpl. Joe Britte.
Mason was arrested and taken to the Hall County Jail. The 39-year-old victim was treated at Northeast Georgia Medical Center.
During their investigation, police noticed several similarities between the assault and the 2001 murder of 37-year-old Crystal Star Barnette.
After following leads and vetting tips, investigators determined Mason was involved in Barnette's death and charged him accordingly, Britte said.
Mason now faces a number of charges related to the two cases, including murder, aggravated assault, battery, robbery, cocaine possession and giving false information.
