TALLAHASSEE, FL -- Faculty members at Florida A&M told interim President Larry Robinson this morning they want to do whatever they can to help the university get off probation.

FAMU officials learned Tuesday that the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools' Commission on Colleges was placing the university on probation for 12 months, effective immediately. SACS cited four primary issues for its decision, particularly issues involving faulty internal audits.

Robinson, who learned directly about the penalty while attending SACS' annual meeting in Dallas, held a town hall meeting at Lee Hall this morning to update the university community. It is finals week, with the fall graduation taking place Friday, and the auditorium was about half full.

"Many of the faculty will be willing and able to assist you," Narayan Persaud, the Faculty Senate president, told Robinson.

SACS took the steps because of several problems, including the revelation that audits were not finished and false summaries were distributed. Robinson also said that SACS raised questions about student safety in the wake of the death of Robert Champion as well as questions about the finances of the Marching 100.
