Sean Callahan and Darlene Callahan, his mother
KENNESAW, Ga. -- Friends and family are preparing to say goodbye to a fallen Clayton County police officer. Sean Callahan will be buried on Friday, but his sister doesn't want his legacy to be buried with him.
"I want everyone to know what an amazing person he was," said Candice Shirley. "He was the kindest, gentlest man."
Shirley spoke to 11Alive News outside her mother's house in Kennesaw. It's where she and her brother spent most of their lives. Festive holiday lights outside the home belie the mournful tears that were being shed inside as Shirley and her mother try to come to terms with their sudden loss.
"I just want everybody to know that it is upsetting what happened, but at the end of the day, my brother is a hero," she said.
Officer Sean Callahan was a hero who gave his life for the citizens of Clayton County. He was shot and killed by a suspect while responding to a domestic disturbance at the Motel 6 on Davidson Parkway in Stockbridge Monday afternoon.
Though he was a tough cop, his sister said there was a softer side to Officer Callahan. "He would probably kill me if I said this, but he was such a romantic at heart, a closet romantic," she said.
At the age of 18 he decided to become a police officer. Shirley said his goal was to become a K-9 officer. She said her brother loved dogs and had two of his own. "K-9 was definitely the end in sight for him," she said. "But just being a part of the force was a dream-come-true for him."
Shirley said their mother Darlene Callahan always worried once her son became a police officer. He had only been on the force four months. Shirley said she always worried about something happening to him. "From the moment he was hired, fear was just automatically in her heart and she would cry some nights just talking to me about it," she said.
There will be no more fears, only tears. A funeral will be held for Officer Sean Callahan at 11AM on Friday at Johnson Ferry Baptist Church in Marietta.
A visitation will be held at Winkenhofer Pine Ridge Funeral Home in Kennesaw Thursday from 6-9PM.
