GRIFFIN, Ga. -- A 62-year-old Spalding County church was destroyed by a fire Wednesday morning.
The blaze at the New Salem Baptist Church was first reported at around 4:30 a.m., according to Spalding County Fire Capt. Eddie James.
Crews arrived at the scene in less than a minute, but the church was already fully engulfed and the building's walls had collapsed, James said.
There were no reports of injuries. James said several members of the congregation arrived to try to cope with the loss of their church.
New Salem Baptist Church was founded in the 1800s and is a pillar of the community, according to James. The building that caught fire was built in 1950.
At this point, investigators believe the fire was an accident, James said.
