ATLANTA -- What was the best movie of 2012?

Marvel's The Avengers was the biggest movie at the box office, bringing in more than $623 million domestically.

It was followed by The Dark Knight Rises with $448 million and The Hunger Games with $408 million. But were they the best movies of the year?

The Academy Awards will answer that question in February. Until then, 11Alive anchor and movie review guy Ted Hall has listed his top 11 movies of 2012.

Six honorable mentions (with Ted's comments in parentheses) made the list:

* The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (long, but the good stuff was really good)

* Les Misérables (lots of singing, some fighting, romance, tears -- and lots of singing)

* Django Unchained (funny, bloody, violent, long, jarring)

* Lawless (Brass knuckles to the throat? No problem.)

* Seven Psychopaths (best non-Tarantino Tarantino)

* Skyfall (one of the best Bonds)

Ted's top 5 movies of 2012 are:

5. The Hunger Games (looks just like you thought it would)

4. The Avengers (so many heroes, so many laughs)

3. Looper (the twists have more punch if you don't know they're coming)

2. Goon (raunchy hockey fighting movie with a kind heart)

1. Argo (tense, smart -- I want to see it again)
