GORDON COUNTY, Ga. -- The Georgia State Patrol in Calhoun and the Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team is investigating a crash that killed three and injured four on Tuesday.
According to GSP, the crash happened Tuesday just before 6 p.m. on Ga. Highway 53 near Mauldin.
A 1996 Ford Bronco, driven by 35-year-old Brent Leighton Lynch was traveling eastbound on Hwy. 53 when it ran off the right side of the road, then re-entered the roadway and ran head-on into a 2006 Kia Spectra.
April Nacoale Winters, 40, of Cartersville was driving the Kia.
Winters, along with two other passengers, Taneka Akey, 21 and Niyla Akey, 27, both from Cartersville, died in the crash.
Other than the driver, three more were injured in the crash, and taken to Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga for treatment. Those include Crystal Lynch, 35, who was a passenger in the Ford Bronco, as well as passengers in the Kia, Alexis Gardner, 20 and Ratanza Winters, 20 both from Cartersville.
On Wednesday, Brent Leighton Lynch was released from Hamilton Medical Center in Dalton and taken to the Gordon County Detention Center at 6 p.m.
Lynch was charged with three counts of first degree vehicular homicide, one count of feticide by vehicle for the unborn child of Alexis Garner, DUI, two counts of serious injury by vehicle, driving on the wrong side of the road and failing to maintain lane.
