ATLANTA -- At least 22 people were driven from their homes by a fire late Monday at the QLS Apartments on Campbellton Road near Stanton Road.
Firefighters reported heavy smoke pouring from the 24-unit building on their arrival at around 11:30 p.m.
The blaze started in a closet of a third floor apartment. The resident, Ellis Gant, said he fell asleep watching television and awoke to the smell of smoke. Investigating, he opened a closet door and flames erupted. Gant said he tried to put out the fire with a pot of water but failed. He said he then threw on some clothes, ran from the building and called 911.
Fire officials said no one was injured.
The Red Cross is providing food and shelter to 12 adults and 10 children.
