ATLANTA - After a two-month long process that included a fan vote, the Atlanta Silverbacks unveiled their new logo this week.
At a fan party at Brewhouse Café in Little 5 Points Wednesday evening, the soccer team showed off its new look.
The new logo was designed by fan Ryan Foose, and was one of four finalists in a design contest which began in November.
"We're very happy with our new logo and we want to thank everyone who was a part of the process," said Silverbacks chairman Boris Jerkunica in a release on the team's website.
The team's old logo, which ran for the past 15 years, featured a Silverback gorilla as the team's mascot, which was inspired by Zoo Atlanta's long-time resident gorilla, Willie B. The team says they are not removing the gorilla from the team's branding, and are creating a secondary logo that will feature a gorilla.
"The Silverback gorilla is at the core of who we are as a brand, so it would be inappropriate to completely push that aside," said Jerkunica in the release. "Like many brands, we're going to have a few secondary logos, and one of those will contain the image of a gorilla."
New merchandise and a new website for the team are expected within the next month, as they prepare for the beginning of the 2013 season in mid-April.
