DECATUR, Ga. -- After a Friday afternoon executive session, the DeKalb Board of Education has named former labor commissioner Michael Thurmond as their interim superintendent.
"We are delighted Mr. Thurmond has agreed to serve as our interim superintendent," said board commissioner Eugene Walker. "Our school district is facing significant challenges and we need a leader wtih a strong track record making fundamental changes in large complex organizations."

Thurmond is credited with transforming two unwieldy state agencies -- first as director of Georgia's Department of Family and Children's Services, then as the state's labor commissioner.
