Underground fire affects downtown businesses, transit

ATLANTA -- Georgia Power investigators are working downtown, where they believe an underground transformer may have blown Monday night.

According to Georgia Power, crews were underground doing repairs when "cables caught fire" in an underground vault.

Carol Boatright, spokesperson for Georgia Power, says the pressure from the fire made about five manhole cover blow into the air. About 10 buildings and MARTA services have been affected. 

MARTA service has been disrupted at the Five Point station and buses are suspended until further notice. The rerouted buses include: Georgia State- Buses 74, 49, 55, 16, 155. Vine City- Buses 3, 51, 13. Garnett- Bus 42. Civic Ctr- Bus 32.

According to Marian McDaniel of Atlanta Fire, no injuries have been reported. 

Crews are working to determine the cause of the underground fire.
