ATLANTA -- A spokesperson for Georgia Power says an underground fire caused a powerful explosion that blew at least five manhole covers several feet into the air.

The Atlanta Fire Department says no one was injured, although MARTA bus service was briefly diverted in the area around the Five Points Station.

Georgia Power spokesperson Carol Boatwright says crews were working underground, making repair when some cables caught fire.

Boatwright says the resulting build-up of pressure from the fire caused several manhole covers to blow.

Boatwright says the fire may have knocked out power to several buildings in downtown. Crews were working to restore power to the affected area.
