WILSON, N.C. -- A North Carolina man released from a Georgia prison hopes to get his life back on track with help from family and friends in his hometown of Wilson. But first, John McNeil had to bury his wife, who died of cancer while waiting for her husband's release.

He'd been home not even two days when he attended her service last week. He was sentenced to life in prison for murder in a 2005 case that supporters say never should have been brought under Georgia's "stand your ground" law.
Last week, McNeil pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter. He was sentenced to time served and probation.
Anita McNeil died Feb. 2 in Wilson and was buried on Valentine's Day. McNeil says his wife supported his plea.
