MARIETTA, Ga. -- The Cobb County Board of Comissioners has decided to postpone a vote on a decision regarding the potential expansion of a waste transfer station in south Cobb County.

Owners of the Bankhead Transfer Station, located near the Chattahoochee River on Veterans Memorial Highway in Mableton have asked for permission to expand the facility, which would permit them to bring about 150,000 tons of trash to the location.

Opponents cite the transfer station's location in the historic River Line district as well as an adverse effect upon property values in the surrounding area. Many residents have gathered signatures in opposition to the expansion.

Other critics point out that an increased number of seagulls and scavenger birds flocking to the site would endanger planes landing or taking off at nearby Charlie Brown Airport on the Fulton County side of the river.

The vote has been rescheduled for March 19.
