NEW YORK -- A new study finds that U.S. women 75 and younger are dying at higher rates than previous years in nearly half the nation's counties.

Many of those women are in rural areas and in the South and West.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says most affected are disadvantaged white women. Some researchers blame higher smoking rates, obesity and less education. Life expectancy has held steady for men.
