KENNESAW, Ga. -- Two people, including a young child, were killed in an accident on Interstate 575 in Cobb County Monday afternoon.
The accident happened at around 1:45 p.m. on southbound I-575 at Chastain Road in Kennesaw, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation.
Cobb County Police Officer Mike Bowman said a Chrysler minivan was heading north on I-575 when it crossed the center median and hit a dump truck that was heading south.
The truck driver was taken to WellStar Kennestone Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the minivan died at the scene; he was identified as 19-year-old Abraham Fernandez-Zuniga of Acworth.
An 8-year-old child in the minivan was also pronounced dead at the scene. The child's name has not yet been released.
Police are still investigating the accident. Traffic on I-575 south was backed up for hours after the crash.
