ATLANTA - Visa Inc. studied prom spending last year and found the average teenager spent $1048. Here are three ways to slash that amount:
Skip the Limo: Prom limousine rentals will run about $800 for six hours for 8 to 10 teenagers. Instead, rent a luxury SUV, Passenger Van or small bus. Prices start at about $300.00 at American Van Rental in Atlanta.
Buying a tuxedo can be less expensive than renting. Many Tuxedo Rental stores sell gently used tuxedos. JC Penney carries basic tuxes for around $150, which is about the same as a rental in many cases.
And for the girls, the typical prom dress costs about $230 but there are dresses available at Macy's, Penney's and other department stores for under $150. Consignment stores are another popular choice. Girls who have their heart set on a designer dress may want to rent one from Rent the Runway.com. Rentals start at $110 dollars.
For girls who can't afford to buy a dress, several non profit organizations have free giveaways. Buckhead Thriftique has a prom dress giveaway April 4th from 4-7 pm. They are seeking donations of dresses and Tuxedos. Recipients must be recommended by school social workers. The store is located at 800 Miami Circle, Suite 160 Atlanta, GA 30324
