One dead after bus crash in Newton County

NEWTON COUNTY, Ga. -- A Covington man was killed when his car was hit by a school bus Friday afternoon.

The Georgia State Patrol said the accident happened on Georgia Highway 36 near High Point Forest Drive.

The GSP says a car driven by James Alexander Cooper, 21, of Covington, was hit by the bus when it was trying to turn left on the roadway. They said Cooper was pronounced dead at the scene.

There were 16 Indian Creek Middle School students on the Newton County bus. One student had a minor injury; none of the other students or the driver were injured.

Police said no charges will be filed in the accident.
