Pilot traffic signal in Cobb County designed to enhance left turn safety.

SMYRNA -- Cobb County DOT is testing a new type of traffic signal designed to enhance safety for left turning drivers. A new, flashing yellow arrow has been added to left turn lane signals at the intersection of the East-West Connector and Cooper Lake Road.

The arrow replaces the solid green bulb to alert drivers take caution when turning left and reminding them that oncoming traffic still has the right of way.

Studies conducted in States where the signal is already in use show a reduced accident rate (for left turn movements) from 20-37%. Cobb officials are looking to expand this pilot program to a pair of intersections along Dallas Highway.
