ATLANTA -- The man who allegedly stabbed a teen to death on New Year's Day in 2011 was convicted by a jury on Thursday night.

According to Yvette Jones, Director of Public Affairs for the Fulton County District Attorney's office, 38-year-old Tommy Collins will serve life behind bars for stabbing 14-year-old Ruben Hand to death.

The stabbing happened just after the Peach Drop New Year's Eve celebration in the Five Points MARTA Station, where surveillance video cameras caught Collins in the act.

In the video, Collins followed the teen victim through the station's fare gate and stabbed him in the neck just minutes later. Immediately, Collins fled the scene.

Jones reported that Collins confessed what he had done to a friend, and asked him to dispose of the clothes he was wearing during the incident, as his clothes had blood on them.

A tip led authorities to find the clothing, and they arrested Collins just a few days after Hand's death.

Collins told authorities he had stabbed Hand because he thought the teen and his friends were part of a group that robbed them earlier that night.
