LILBURN, Ga. -- The driver of an SUV is dead after a crashing into a mast arm post in Lilburn on Tuesday afternoon.
Lilburn police chief Bruce Headley said the SUV was travelling southbound on US 29 around 4:00 p.m. It ran into the mast arm post at the intersection of US 29 and Indian Trail Road.
Immediately when the crash happened, the vehicle caught fire and was engulfed in flames. When the police arrived, they found the driver deceased, the body could not be identified on scene.
The Gwinnett County Medical Examiner's Office and the Lilburn Police Department are investigating.
As of 7:20 p.m., northbound and southbound lanes of US 29 were open. However, as spokeswoman for the City of Lilburn Nikki Young reported, vehicles cannot cross over US 29 on Indian Trail/Killian Hill.
Hedley said officials from the police department and GDOT are continuing to work so that the intersection in safe before it reopens.
