  • FAYETTEVILLE, Ga -- For the second time in a little over a month a woman was assaulted and robbed in the same parking lot of the same shopping center in Fayetteville. But this time the suspect got away.

Fayetteville Police are looking for a suspect who attacked a Fayetteville woman Saturday morning in the parking lot of the Kohl's Department store in the Fayetteville Pavilion.

Police released a surveillance video of the suspect who was seen inside the store and outside the store. "By all appearances he was looking for a target both inside the store and outside the store as he was walking around," said Lt. Mike Whitlow. "He was trying to spot a potential target."

At about 10:07AM the suspect attacked a woman getting out of her car to head into the store. "He approached her, grabbed her by her collar, threw her on the ground, took her purse from her and ran across the parking lot," Lt. Whitlow said.

This is the second incident in the same parking lot, almost in the exact same spot, Lt. Whitlow said. On March 14, 2013 three men forced a woman out of her car at gunpoint. The suspects stole the car and led police on a multi-county chase. The chase ended in Atlanta when police performed a pit maneuver and forced the car to crash. All three suspects were arrested.

Fayetteville Police stepped up patrolling in the Pavilion after that carjacking. Lt. Whitlow said officers were patrolling in the Pavilion when the incident happened. "Literally it was a flash of an instant," he said. "We would have had to have an officer right there to be able to respond to it."

Whitlow said shoppers need to be aware of their surroundings. "We continue to do what we're doing, we just want people to be hyper-vigilant," he said.

Mary Wells said she shops at the Pavilion at least once a week. She said she was in the parking lot after the carjacking and was also there on Saturday when the woman was robbed. "I make sure I'm aware of my surroundings and I take precautions and I look before I go out to the car," she said.

Michelle Ketterer said she was shopping with her daughter and though she was safe during daylight hours until she was told the latest incident happened at 10AM. "Like right now, I wouldn't think I would have to (worry)," she said. "Well, I guess I do."

Fayetteville Police are hoping someone recognizes the suspect from the video. They are asking anyone with information about the robbery to call Lieutenant Mike Whitlow at 770-461-4441.
