SMYRNA, Ga. -- HAZMAT crews have removed and detonated an explosive device found inside a Smyrna home Monday evening.

The home on Tynemoore Trace belonged to a man who recently died. Cobb County Police spokesman Mike Bowman said an estate cleaning crew found the device in the safe while cleaning the home.

The entire block was evacuated to a nearby church as a precaution. Neighbors have since been allowed to return home.

Authorities were able to remove and safely detonate the device at around 11:30 p.m. Monday.

An investigation is ongoing to determine the device's origin and to figure out why it was in the man's home.
