ATLANTA -- Dalton, Ga.-based carpet maker Engineered Floors LLC will spend $450 million over five years to build new facilities in Whitfield and Murray counties.

The move will bring at least 2,000 new jobs to the Peach State, over five years. The company already employs 1,400 in the region.

Engineered Floors will build manufacturing and distribution facilities in Whitfield County, and a manufacturing facility in Murray County.

The state said the company is eligible for up $69.7 million in tax incentives, including mega-project job tax credits and Georgia Quick Start assistance.

"The company has been recommended for a discretionary grant, and as a project of regional significance it will receive an exemption of sales tax on energy used in manufacturing, and an exemption for the sales tax on construction materials," said Alison Tyrer, Georgia Department of Economic Development spokeswoman.

It is good news for a region that still has the highest unemployment rate in the state at 10.3%

Engineered Floors is a privately held carpet producer founded by Robert E. Shaw in 2009 and based in Dalton with facilities in Calhoun and Dalton. It makes stain-resistant and colorfast PureColor next-generation solution dyed polyester fiber with SoilShielf for residential replacement and multifamily housing carpeting.

Engineered Floors expects to begin construction on the expanded facilities in Summer, 2013, and complete them in Summer, 2014.

The company has not announced when it would begin taking applications for the new jobs.

But Engineered Floors is currently hiring an additional 150 manufacturing workers for its expanded Dalton facility. The company wants to have all 150 new workers in place by June, 2013. Those interested must apply in person at the Dalton plant, 1025 Enterprise Drive.
