DUNWOODY, Ga. -- Authorities investigated an officer-involved shooting that happened in the 100 block of Perimeter Center in Dunwoody on Friday afternoon.

A Dunwoody Police officer intercepted 20-year-old Robert Goodman while he was trying to steal a car that was parked in the lot of Bassett around 3:00 p.m.

According to a release, when officers spotted the suspect he attempted to flee from them in the vehicle. Goodman hit two vehicles and two police cruisers in the parking lot before driving toward an officer who was approaching him on foot.

Authorities say the officer fired at the suspect to protect himself from being struck by Goodman's vehicle. No injuries were reported.

"We were all so happy that we were safe, because so many things could have happened," said Genny McGraw, who works in the shopping plaza.

McGraw came outside Friday afternoon to find her car smashed against a tree, hit during the police chase.

"All we could hear was the shooting and the screaming and the cars bashing in."

Goodman was arrested and charged with theft by receiving, aggravated assault against an officer, aggravated assault, four counts of hit & run, damage to government property and possession of tool used in the commission of a crime.

Officer John Chafee told 11Alive on Friday evening that there is no indication of any connection between Friday's car theft and a recent carjacking in Buckhead, but that investigators may explore the possibility.

Some similar cimes have taken place in other neighborhoods near Atlanta - in Fayetteville and southwest Atlanta.
