DECATUR, Ga. -- After crying for several hours Friday, Juanita Barber Hodges is still trying to figure out why anyone would have wanted to murder her 19-year-old grandson.

"He didn't deserve that; he didn't get in no trouble; he didn't do anything to deserve, you know, to be killed," she told 11 Alive News.

Javereon Barber was walking a few blocks to the store with a friend along Larkspur Terrace just before one Friday morning when a white SUV drove by, backed up and someone in the back seat began shooting.

Javereon died at the scene, but his friend escaped unharmed.

Now he leaves behind a young son.

"Devastating to really just sit here and witness this," his sister, Canlexsean Stephens, told 11 Alive.

"My nephew is 9 months; he's not even a year old yet and now he don't have a father figure in his life," she added.

Less than a half hour after Javereon's murder, a similar drive-by shooting happened about 6 miles away on Elkhorn Drive.

Shots fired from a possibly white SUV hit and wounded a man who was walking a dog with his girlfriend.

He's in stable condition at Atlanta's Grady Memorial Hospital and she was unhurt.

DeKalb County Police detectives were going door to door in the neighborhoods Friday looking for any clues and trying to find out if the two shootings could be related.

"At this point that determination has not been made if they're both connected, but certainly we are looking into that possibility," police spokesperson Mekka Parish told 11 Alive.

She said police are looking for a white GMC Tahoe or Chevy Suburban with as many as five people inside at the time of the first shooting.
