ROME, Ga. -- A man who was paralyzed while saving a young girl's life a week ago has taken a turn for the worse.

Michael Patterson, 43, has been hospitalized since diving into a shallow creek to save the life of 4-year-old Javea Jones. His family reported Saturday he has contracted pneumonia in both his lungs.

Patterson and his son were near Euharlee Creek last week when they heard the screams of a desperate mother who was watching Javea being swept downstream by a steady current. Patterson struck his head and severed his spine when he dove into the creek, yet still managed to rescue the girl.

Earlier this week, Patterson battled a fever of 106 degrees after developing an internal infection.
