DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -- Crews from the DeKalb Fire Department rescued a newborn puppy on Monday morning, following recent severe weather.

Firefighters received a call about the puppy early that morning. The caller told a dispatcher that the animal was lodged in the root ball of a tree that had been struck by storms and had fallen over.

"People know the fire department is there to rescue them and put out fires," Fire Chief Eddie O'Brien said. "Rescuing animals is a lesser-known part of what we do, but we want to help DeKalb residents in other ways, if we can. We're very fortunate to be able to help our neighbors this way."

O'Brien said the puppy's owners now have him, and are having evaluations done by their local veterinarian to make sure the dog is okay.
