ATLANTA -- What happens when a joke involving popular boy band "One Direction" and the Bert Show goes awry? Fans across the entire country get involved via Twitter.
One Direction, they're the hottest boy band in the world, right now and on Monday evening, their loyal fans lashed out at the members of the Bert Show using a number of hashtags including: #thingsbetterthanthebertshow.
It all started with a long-standing joke between Bert Show hosts Bert Weiss, Jeff Dauler and Kristin Klingshirn -- they meant to poke fun at Kristin for flirting with band member Niall Horan.
This week, they posted a photo on Twitter - a reenactment of her talk with the 19 year old and joked about the meeting on-air. After a short clip of the interview found its way online and a social media mob scene began.
Fans claimed the team was disrespectful and that Kristen was playing with Niall's emotions.
Hate messages, racial slurs and death threats all showed up online. Many of them too graphic to even report. At one point the team was getting 2,400 tweets per hour.
The incident sparked a new mission for the team -- to tackle Cyber Bullying.
