GWINNETT COUNTY -- Police say a park ranger was shot Wednesday evening at Buford Dam Park.
Gwinnett County Police Cpl. Jake Smith said the shooting happened at around 10:15 p.m. at the Lower Overlook area of the park. The wounded ranger, 70-year-old D. P. Wright, made his way on foot to a main park road where passersby called 911.
Smith said Wright was unarmed when he was shot.
Wright was able to give a statement to the responding officers before he was transported to a local hospital. He said he had approached the suspect to tell her the park was closed. The victim described the suspect as a black woman in a pickup truck.
Officers checked the park area and found a person matching the ranger's description of the suspect dead inside a nearby vehicle.
Detectives say the suspect committed suicide. She was identified Thursday as 34-year-old Qiana Moore of Woodstock. Investigators found a handgun inside Moore's car.
Smith said detectives are now considering the possibility that Moore was attempting to commit "suicide by cop," and that she saw Wright's ranger uniform and mistook him for a police officer.
