ELLIJAY, Ga. -- A North Georgia teen is dead after a power line fell near her during a storm on Wednesday.
According to Gilmer County authorities, 19-year-old Stephanie Diaz was electrocuted by a fallen power line on Victory Circle during an afternoon storm. The incident happened around 4:20 p.m.
Elijay Police Chief Ed Lacey says Diaz was babysitting at the time of her death. Apparently, she had gone outside the investigate why her home had lost power. A neighbor called 911. When first responders arrived and saw the live wire, they weren't able to help her until power was cut off.
"It's a terrible feeling knowing there's someone over there that needs help but you just can't get over to them," said Ellijay Police Sgt. Alan Henson. "It's a bad feeling."
Even though Diaz was at least 25 feet away from the downed line, the current apparently traveled through either a puddle or the wet ground and electrocuted her.
"That power can move through the ground, through water, it can get to you," Henson said. "If you're in a house, stay in a house, if you're in a car stay in a car.
