MCDONOUGH, Ga. -- For at least the fourth time this month, thieves have taken drastic and destructive measures to steal a cash machine.
The latest crime comes in McDonough where crooks used a pickup truck to smash through a CVS pharmacy.
The police are calling it the newest twist to smash and grab. Forget the bricks through the window, now it's a powerful pickup through the front door.
The object in McDonough, a bolted down cash machine. It was a brazen move in the middle of the night as the driver of the pickup kept maneuvering the vehicle so it would go head-on into the machine. He didn't succeed.
"There is a time factor there. They know once an alarm is activated they have a certain amount of time. There were there for a very short time, maybe a minute or so," said Sgt. Joey Smith of the Henry County Police Department.
Police say the vehicle was probably stolen and describe it as a Blue and White Dodge Ram Pickup.
Also overnight police say a vehicle rammed through a plate glass window of a beauty supply store on Cobb Parkway in Smyrna and thieves escaped with hair weaves.
"They will occupy a vehicle and we could assume probably a stolen vehicle, and they will actually use the vehicle as a ram to go inside the business to obtain whatever items they came for," Smith said.
And there have been plenty of copycats. Earlier this month a pickup was backed into an Atlanta hair salon, and before that a van smashed through the door of a market, where thieves tried to grab the ATM and almost got run over by their own vehicle when it started to move unexpectedly.
And in yet another incident, thieves backed a truck into a Stone Mountain Pawn and Gun Shop and eventually got away with just an empty plastic gun case.
McDonough Police are asking the public to help in locating the pickup used last night and the thieves who drove it.
The CVS Pharmacy was one of three businesses in metro Atlanta that was victimized by smash and grab thieves.
At about 5:00am Tuesday a truck backed into the front entrance of the I Heart Hair salon on Marietta Boulevard in Atlanta. Theives stole a box of hair weaves according to a police incident report.
Less than a half hour later another beauty salon on Cobb Parkway in Smyrna was burglarized. Surveillance video at Joy Beauty Supply showed a white sedan smash through a security gate at the store. Thieves stole more than $50,000 worth of hair weaves according to the owner.
