ACWORTH, Ga. -- Police in Cherokee County are investigating a suspected carjacking and fatal shooting.

The incident happened Thursday afternoon on Highway 92 near Wade Green Road in Acworth, where the stolen car crashed. It was taken from a nearby subdivision.

Cherokee County Sheriff's Lt. Jay Baker said the owner of the car and three suspects were in the vehicle when it crashed.

Two suspects fled on foot, while the third was discovered dead in the driver's seat. Baker said the Cherokee County Coroner found a gunshot wound in the driver's back; it is unclear if it was the bullet that killed him. An autopsy is scheduled for Friday.

The owner of the car was also in the vehicle. He told police that one of the suspects hit him in the head with a gun. The gun discharged and the car swerved off the road and hit a tree.

The car's owner was taken to WellStar Kennestone Hospital with head injuries, Baker said. No names have been released.

Investigators are still searching for the two suspects at large.
