GRIFFIN, Ga. -- Disciplinary action has been taken against a preschool student who brought a handgun to school on Tuesday.
The incident happened at Jordan Hill Elementary in Griffin. According to a letter from the school's principal Anthony Aikens, a teacher located the gun in a student's backpack.
According to the letter, the teacher learned of the gun after being warned by another student.
The teacher then took the handgun and the bookbag to the administration office and called the authorities.
The parents of the child were contacted and disciplinary action was taken.
Aikens concluded the letter by reinforcing the importance of student safety:
Our students were not in danger at any time. I am calling you today in an effort to keep you informed and ask for your help in keeping our school campus safe.
All students and families must be aware of the actions that violate school rules and understand the consequences. We can avoid disciplinary action by each of you talking with your student about appropriate behavior at school. And, please, keep all weapons out of the reach of children.
The safety of our students and staff is our number one priority.
