BUFORD, Ga. -- A man and a woman are dead following an officer involved shooting in Gwinnett County Wednesday morning.

Sgt. Brian Doan of the Gwinnett Police Department said around 12:30 a.m., officers were called to a home in the 6400 block of Old Shadburn Ferry Road in unincorporated Buford. The caller reported a domestic disturbance.

When officers arrived, an elderly woman began to approach them in the home's driveway. An elderly man followed behind her, and shot her in the back. She died on scene.

Doan said the officers in turn fired at the man as the woman fell to the ground. Officers have not confirmed that their shot hit him.

"We are working the possibility that the male possibly committed suicide when he was laying on the ground," Doan said. "We're not sure if the officer struck the male with his rounds or if the man fell to the ground hearing the gunshots."

Police did not release the identity of the victims. The relationship between the man and woman remains unclear.

The officer was uninjured, Doan said.
