It's the day to give thanks... to America's favorite green dip. September 16th is national guacamole day. While tortilla chips are traditional, guacamole maker Wholly Guacamole says 46% of customers report eating it with veggies, 32% on a salad, and 31% on hamburgers.

At the turn of the century, Americans ate 8 million pounds of avocados during Super Bowl festivities. But in 2002, the Hass Avocado Board formed to promote the dominant variety sold in the U.S. After a heavy marketing campaign, consumption grew to 71.4 million pounds (or about 142 million avocados) during the same period. According to the board, Americans are eating more avocados year-round. Three billion of them were consumed in the U.S. last year.
Top producers include California, Mexico. Chile, Peru, Dominican Republic, and New Zealand.
