Alpharetta Department of Public Safety spokesman George Gordon said police received a phone call about a woman in distress. The caller was concerned for the woman after receiving a text from her that implied she planned to commit suicide.
When two police officers arrived at the house, the woman ran to grab a gun and then pointed it at one of the cops.
This action "(forced) the other officer to fire upon the female to save the officer's life," Gordon said.
The woman, whose name was not released, was treated by EMS at the scene and then taken to North Fulton Hospital.
Gordon said that, per procedure, the two responding officers have been placed on administrative leave. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is now looking into the shooting.
