VSP Vision Care is providing five days of free eye screenings in mobile clinics at Atlanta Metropolitan State College.
ATLANTA -- The insurance company VSP Vision Care will hold a huge eye clinic from Wednesday through Sunday, and it's all free.
It's designed for patients who don't qualify for government assistance but can't afford vision coverage on their own. The family income is generally no more than 200 percent of federal poverty level.
VSP has set up three mobile eye care clinics outside the student center at Atlanta Metropolitan State College, which is located at 1630 Metropolitan Parkway.
The clinic will use 20 volunteer optometrists and serve 2,000 patients, including children.
If they need a prescription, the patients will be able to get free glasses on-site. Together, the exam and eyewear will save patients close to $400 each.
The whole process will take about 45 minutes, and the clinic will run on a first-come-first-served basis.
"It's very important to get an annual exam, as the eye is the only place in the body that you can look into to detect about 30 different diseases, like hypertension and diabetes," said Gil Melgoza of VSP Vision Care.
A study by VisionWatch shows 210,000 people in Atlanta are without vision coverage.
Melgoza said he was sold on this program when he put glasses on a child for the first time.
"This child had never worn glasses before. When he put them on, he was reaching into the air. He didn't realize he was supposed to see this way," Melgoza told 11Alive's Jennifer Leslie. "I realized this is my calling, this is what I want to do."
Gold Medal Olympian Misty May-Treanor will be attending the event on World Sight Day, October 10, to share how access to vision care has made an impact on her life.
There's been a lot of talk about health care coverage through the the Affordable Care Act.
The law requires insurance companies to include vision care for children, but not adults.
