Clayton County Police Capt. Steve Branham said one person was killed in the confrontation between an officer and a motorist.
Branham said the officer observed what appeared to be a crime in process and attempted to stop the motorist. When the motorist was stopped, there was a physical confrontation between the officer and the motorist.
It appeared, Branham said, that the motorist was trying to take the officer's weapon. In the ensuing struggle over the weapon, the gun discharged, striking the motorist.
The officer was not injured.
Branham said the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was taking over the investigation of the incident.
Backups stretch beyond Jonesboro Road (Ga. Hwy. 54) at this point.
Northbound motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible. I-675 northbound is a good alternate for the area.
