ATLANTA -- Two people were hit by a car on a Downtown Atlanta sidewalk Friday morning.
The victims were struck shortly after 2:30 a.m. on John Wesley Dobbs Avenue near Jesse Hill Jr. Drive and the Downtown Connector.
According to a police report, the victims -- a man and a woman -- were standing on the sidewalk and talking. A driver heading down Jesse Hill Jr. Drive lost control of his Honda Accord, spun off the road and hit both pedestrians.
The woman broke both her wrists and suffered a hematoma to her forehead, while the man sustained a head injury in the accident. Both were taken to Grady Memorial Hospital in critical yet stable condition. A witness said both victims are homeless and usually sleep under a nearby bridge.
The driver, 18-year-old Vic Abwavo, and his passenger were detained by Georgia State University police officers, who performed field sobriety tests. Abwavo will face charges in the accident, according to the police report.
The car was impounded.
