COVINGTON, Ga. -- NBA superstar Shaquille O'Neal was one of many surprises as Covington honored a 5-year-old boy whose wish was to be a police officer.

The young Covington resident has spinal muscular atrophy, a genetic condition that affects his muscle movement and leaves him in a wheelchair. But Morgan always has a big smile on his face and spreads sunshine to all who meet him.

When the Covington Police Department learned Morgan's story, they wasted no time in making his dream come true. The little boy was sworn in as the newest member of the force. He also led this year's Covington Christmas Parade.

Tuesday, Dec. 17 is Officer Morgan Day in Covington, and people showed up at the town's historic square to celebrate this very special police officer.

Shaq showed up and helped rescue a cat from a tree.  He led the crowd in singing.  11Alive's Julie Wolfe says the event touched him so much, Shaq got teary-eyed.  Watch Shaq's surprise visit here.

Morgan began his foot patrol at 11 a.m. He arrested a bank robber, solved an art heist and rescued a kidnapped mascot. Then he was treated to a visit from Santa Claus and other Christmas surprises from the 11Alive Help Desk.

At the end of his special day, Covington's Santa helped Bill Liss and our Help Desk complete Morgan's wish list. Pennsylvania-based Quantum Rehab donated a brand new wheelchair that will allow Morgan to rise up out of a sitting position. R-and-R Mobility of Conyers retrofitted the family van to make it handicapped accessible. Southwest Airlines provided round-trip tickets tickets for Morgan's family to take a Disney Cruise. Georgia Make-A-Wish helped coordinate the cruise.

Before heading to the square for his special day, Officer Morgan and his family appeared on the 11Alive morning show, where the young cop helped Elle Duncan report on traffic and assisted Commuter Dude with his segment. Watch Officer Morgan's morning show debut.
