A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect Sunday night into Monday morning for north Georgia and the western metro counties.  The counties included are Dade, Walker, Catoosa, Whitfield, Murray, Fannin, Gilmer, Union, Towns, Chattooga, Gordon, Pickens, Dawson, Lumpkin, White, Floyd, Bartow, Cherokee, Polk, Paulding, Cobb, Haralson, Carroll, Douglas and Heard.

We have 3 main threats with this system: Rain changing to snow, black ice developing, and frigid temperatures.  Here's a breakdown of all of these.

Rain changing over to snow flurries:

The big changes move in late Sunday.  The main area of rain moves in late Sunday night.  As the cold air comes in behind it, we will see a brief changeover to snow flurries overnight Sunday into Monday morning.  We don't expect accumulations in Atlanta.  We could have some accumulations in north and northwest Georgia of around an inch.

Black Ice Developing:

We  have to watch for black ice to develop as the cold air will push in before much of the water is able to dry up.  There will be a sharp drop in the temperatures overnight Sunday night into Monday morning.  Depending on the timing of the cold and the amount of water that is left behind, we may not have time for that water to completely evaporate before it drops below freezing.  There could be some black ice developing in north Georgia and there may even be some icy patches in the metro area Monday morning.

Frigid Temperatures moving in:

This will be some of the coldest air that we have seen in a long time.  We do expect a low of 6 degrees Tuesday morning with a high Tuesday of only 25.  Wind chills will be below zero Tuesday morning.  We will have an extended period with temperatures below freezing.  It will be below freezing late Sunday night into Wednesday afternoon.  Our temperatures will finally rise back to the 40s by Wednesday afternoon.
