ATLANTA -- Since MARTA's "Ride With Respect" campaign began in November, 525 people have been suspended from riding for violating the rules.

MARTA spokesperson Lyle Harris says most of the suspensions were for "fare evasions," or people not paying to ride. Others were kicked off for smoking or loud music.

The code of conduct cracks down on what CEO and General Manager Keith Parker calls "knucklehead" behavior such as smoking, panhandling, drinking or eating on MARTA.

Violators of the rules face suspension of seven days to an entire year. Repeat offenders could be permanently banned from using MARTA.
