ATLANTA (WXIA) -- Efforts to legalize medical marijuana in Georgia has gained an unlikely ally -- conservative Macon Republican Allen Peake - (R - Macon).

Rep. Peake says he was forced to rethink his longstanding opposition to medical marijuana after visiting four-year-old Haleigh Cox in the hospital.

"If it was my child or grandchild and this was the only remedy that helps with a medical condition, I'd be pushing as hard as I can," Rep. Peake.

Cox's family says the four-year-old suffers from a severe medical condition which results in dozens of seizures every day. Her family says only medical marijuana has been able to calm her seizures.

Rep. Peake is currently crafting legislation but wants to make sure it's narrowly tailored to cover people whose medical conditions don't respond to traditional treatments.
