LITHONIA, Ga. -- One person died and another person was injured after being struck by a truck on Interstate 20 Wednesday morning. Police have arrested a suspect in connection with the accident.
The pedestrians, who were struck at around 4:45 a.m. on I-20 west near Panola Road in DeKalb County, had arrived at the scene to help a friend change a flat tire, according to a police spokesperson.
DeKalb County police confirmed that one of the victims, identified as 29-year-old Kleeon Cadogan, died after being hit. The other is being treated at Grady Memorial Hospital.
The driver accused of hitting the pair, 29-year-old Andrew Spencer, tried to leave the scene, but was followed for about a mile by a witness to the accident. Spencer eventually pulled over and was arrested. He has been charged with vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of an accident.
Police shut down all of I-20 west except one left lane for more than an hour to investigate the accident. All lanes were reopened just before 7 a.m.
Wednesday's incident was the second accident involving a pedestrian on an Atlanta interstate in 24 hours. Tuesday night, a man was hit and killed while trying to cross the Downtown Connector.
Officials remind drivers to call HERO units at 511 to help any emergencies on the interstate.
