East Lake residents report a rash of break ins
ATLANTA- Walking through his East lake home and out the back doors, Nathan Douglas showed 11Alive how thieves came and went in roughly 45 seconds.
"They busted through the back gate, drove a truck right up to the back of the house, took what they wanted and were gone before the alarm even went off," said Douglas.
The burglars took a TV and two personal safes. The thieves later ditched one of the safes full of personal documents. Someone found them and called Douglas to return them.
"I guess they didn't find anything of value, so once they pried the safe open they just left it behind," said Douglas.
What's disturbing is Douglas quickly learned that he's one of dozens of victims.
"I started looking online at neighborhood emails and there have been a lot of break ins," said Douglas.
11Alive News found a map put out by the Atlanta Police Department that shows a number of home burglaries in and around East Lake in the last two months.
According to the neighborhood association, homes have also been targeting in nearby communities including Midway Woods and White Oak Hills.
The M.O. is specific -- the thieves knock on the door to see if anyone is home. If not, they pull a truck right up to the house and take easy to grab items like TVs, laptops and tablets.
Alarm systems and barking dogs do not seem to be a deterrent.
