The man who got into a gunfight with a Brinks security guard inside Arbor Place Mall in Douglasville was identified Tuesday as the owner of a music memorabilia store.
Investigators said they determined that David Broderick, 41, of Stone Mountain, rented a large van Monday morning. He then spent a good amount of time at the mall waiting until just after noon when the Brinks guard entered through the back to service the ATMs.
A police official said Broderick pointed a gun at the guard and, during the subsequent gun battle in which a bullet went flying into the food court, five shots were fired.
The guard, who was shot in the leg, was not identified, but officials said he was able to go home from the hospital Tuesday.
Broderick, who was shot in the face and side, remained under sedation at Grady Memorial Hospital.
Police said they had not ruled out statements from some witnesses who said a second suspect was involved in the botched mall holdup.
"We've actually had investigators researching all the video surveillance at the mall for several hours, I mean way into the late, late evening hours last night. There is some tape that is obviously very helpful to us and we're still continuing that today," said Major Oliver Fladrich of the Douglasville Police Department.
Police said that money, the apparent target of the robbery, was recovered. A witness, Denise Shipp of Douglasville, said she was eating lunch in the mall's food court with her husband Jon when they heard gunshots. She said her husband saw the guard tackle the suspect and hold him on ground. She said people in the food court were diving under tables, holding up chairs and hiding behind partition walls.
A bullet hole was visible in a window over the mall's front entrance -- its apparent trajectory from the shooting scene passing directly above the food court and an indoor playground.
Mall officials were unsure if any children were on the playground when the shooting happened, but eyewitnesses said they saw parents grabbing children from the playground and running away.
