Congressman David Scott (D-13th Dist.) issued a statement Monday evening, following the announcement of the merger between Delta and Northwest:
"Today's announcement of the merger between Delta Air Lines and Northwest Air Lines marks an important day for the air line industry and Atlanta", said Scott. "Delta has such a presence in Atlanta and thousands of families will be affected by this merger. The next phase of this process will be important as the combined-carrier will have to address the future of current employees and the benefit commitments made to retirees. Although this is surely a stressful time for the many families that stand to be affected by this merger, I am optimistic that Delta will once again show great leadership for the employees and families of Delta Air Lines."
Scott represents more Delta employees and retirees in his district than any other district. The 13th District includes areas to the south and west of Atlanta, where a large number of Delta employees live.
Congressman John Lewis (D-5th Dist.), whose district includes Delta's world headquarters in Atlanta, also issued a statement Monday evening:
"This is a great step for Delta," said Lewis. "It is a powerful combination that should help strengthen the air transportation industry in this country. This would make Delta one of the largest airlines in the world. I salute the officials of Northwest, and especially Delta for using their hard-won stability to strengthen their position and improve their ability to serve the people. This merger should make it easier for people in Atlanta and around the nation to fly, and it preserves the Delta name. The Delta headquarters will remain in Atlanta, which helps protect the economy of the city during a time of recession."
