New Arrest in Six Flags Beating

Police in Cobb County say there has been another arrest Wednesday in relation to the beating of Joshua Martin.

Two people were charged Tuesday: Brad Johnson, 18, of Atlanta, charged with Violation of the Gang Act, Aggravated Battery, Battery, and Simple Assault. Johnson is in Cobb County Jail; his bond is set at $100,000. And a 16-year-old juvenile from Marietta, charged with Violation of the Gang Act and Party to Aggravated Battery. The juvenile is reportedly in custody.

According to Cobb police, both teens are gang members. Police said they are hoping that others involved in the beating will turn themselves in, because investigators are finding out who they are from people who know them.

Martin, 19, remains hospitalized at Grady Memorial Hospital in downtown Atlanta after the beating by a group of at least 10 teens at a bus stop outside the amusement park.

11Alive's Denis O'Hayer said that Johnson was an employee of Six Flags. Officials from Six Flags said that Johnson did work for them, but would not provide any additional information about what he did at the park.

Johnson's grandmother said her grandson is innocent.

"But I do believe my grandson is innocent," said Shirley Johnson. "He's a good child."

But in the arrest warrant, police said Johnson was part of a gang that calls itself YGL -- Young Gangster Living. The warrant also said they wear the same colors, flash gang signs, and participate in criminal gang activity, including the beating of Martin.

Police said Johnson and the 16-year-old teen also in custody and are providing officers names in the case.

"Now when the officers come to your house, serving a warrant, and put you in handcuffs, the talking's over," said Mickey Lloyd of the Cobb County Department of Public Safety. "If you want to talk; If you want to tell your side of the story, you need to turn yourself in now."

Late Tuesday afternoon, Joshua Martin awakened for the first time since being beaten a week ago. His grandmother said that he is alert and is able to speak.

"His eyes are open and he is able to make sentences," Martin's grandmother, Barbara Martin said. "He knows we are there."

She said he even remembers his brutal beating.

"He said it is like he is having a nightmare," she said. "That's the way he described it."

Barbara Martin said this is an answer to her family's prayers and doctors are ecstatic at his improvement.

Doctors said Joshua Martin still has a long recovery in front of him. His family said they are hopeful more people will come forward in the case.

Shirley Johnson is raising her grandson and his four siblings on her own. She said she shares the Martin family's anguish.

"Because it's sad for both sides; both families," Johnson said.
