Officer and son of assistant chief in critical condition after fatal off-duty crash

Offduty officer hurt in crash

ATLANTA -- An off-duty Atlanta police officer sustained "substantial injuries but is stable" following an accident that killed his passenger Wednesday morning.

Preliminary investigation shows the officer was the driver of a white Dodge Challenger which slammed into a stone wall, according to Georgia State Patrol. He was wearing a seatbelt and taken to Grady.

Police have identified the officer as Shawn Jones, son of the assistant chief of the same name. He is a member of the Atlanta Police Department's airport division and has been with the APD since November of 2011.

The passenger, identified as 20-year-old Ramish Attai of Lilburn, Ga. was killed in the crash.

Authorities said speed was a factor in the incident, which shut down Peachtree Street near West Peachtree and Spring Street for most of the morning. The car's tires struck the curb before losing control and striking a rock wall.

Witness told 11Alive's Erin Calandra they believe the car may have been racing. Police are interviewing people who may have been involved in the race.
