NEWTON CO, Ga—More than 100 people have signed a petition asking for changes at a fast-moving intersection in Newton County.
“It's almost like you're in a tennis match, and you don't know which way the ball is coming,” says neighbor Fern Sapp.
Their concern is over the intersection of Brown Bridge Road and Christian Road, the scene of a recent fatal accident. Vehicles approaching the intersection on Brown Bridge are topping a hill in one direction, and rounding a curve the other direction. Neighbors say it can be difficult to judge if it’s safe to enter Brown Bridge, especially when drivers are traveling in excess of the 45-mile-an-hour speed limit.
“It's always a chance,” says Kerri Draper. “You're never certain, and it's uncomfortable.”
11Alive’s Commuter Dude contacted Newton County. The roads department took a look and determined the intersection meets the minimum sight distance requirements for a 45 mph zone.
The county is looking at improvements to this section of Brown Bridge, but there's no timeline.
County Commissioner Stan Edwards emailed Commuter Dude to say if speeding is indeed the issue, he would support efforts in collaboration with the Sheriff’s Department to slow drivers.
Commuter Dude Jerry Carnes has put in a call to the sheriff asking for an enforcement effort along Brown Bridge.
